If there’s any country that I am truly humbled by in terms of their freakish obsession with coffee (espresso in particular), it is New Zealand. For the Beijing Olympics, the New Zealand team brought their own barista to China. I am predicting New Zealand wins every gold medal possible. They will not lose at anything. Follow their gold medal domination from the Olympic schedule.
When Accur, the team sponsor that located this barista talent, was asked what this meant to the barista, they said “this is truly a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.” And how true, I say. Life can only go downhill from here.
New Zealand chef de mission Dave Currie said that the athletes will drink “a hell of a lot of it.” However, not “enough cups of coffee to be over the limit…55 cups of coffee, or whatever it is.”
Should I ever decided to compete in the Olympics, the 2010 Olympics or maybe the 2012 Olympics, I am going to request the US find such a worthy barista to follow me to the host country.
